Un jour, mon petit fr\u00e8re jouait \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9, il s&rsquo;est approch\u00e9 trop pr\u00e8s et a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 prendre feu.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u00c0 4 ans, Coumba s&rsquo;est pr\u00e9cipit\u00e9e pour sauver son fr\u00e8re alors que le feu se propageait.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00ab\u00a0Je suis tomb\u00e9e sur le c\u00f4t\u00e9 gauche, et c&rsquo;est l\u00e0 que je me suis br\u00fbl\u00e9e\u00a0\u00bb<\/em>, raconte-t-elle. \u00ab\u00a0<em>Mon fr\u00e8re a alors beaucoup pleur\u00e9, et ma m\u00e8re a entendu. Elle est venue imm\u00e9diatement, mais j&rsquo;\u00e9tais d\u00e9j\u00e0 enti\u00e8rement br\u00fbl\u00e9e sur le c\u00f4t\u00e9 gauche.\u00a0\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Avec son bras gauche soud\u00e9 en position pli\u00e9e et sa main endommag\u00e9e, Coumba s&rsquo;est adapt\u00e9e \u00e0 vivre avec un seul bras et une seule main. En grandissant, elle s&rsquo;est mari\u00e9e, a travaill\u00e9 comme domestique et a \u00e9lev\u00e9 trois enfants dans leur ferme du nord du S\u00e9n\u00e9gal o\u00f9 elle cultivait du riz et des l\u00e9gumes. Coumba r\u00eavait de s&rsquo;occuper elle-m\u00eame de la ferme, comme le font beaucoup d&rsquo;autres femmes au S\u00e9n\u00e9gal, mais l&rsquo;amplitude limit\u00e9e de ses mouvements \u00e9tait un r\u00e9el handicap.<\/p>\n<p>A l&rsquo;\u00e2ge de 31 ans, apr\u00e8s des d\u00e9cennies de vie avec son bras atrophi\u00e9, l&rsquo;op\u00e9ration de Coumba sur l&rsquo;<em>Africa Mercy\u00ae<\/em> ><p><strong>Une intervention chirurgicale lourde mais synonyme d&rsquo;une toute nouvelle vie<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Le Dr Tertius Venter, chirurgien en reconstruction plastique, a op\u00e9r\u00e9 Coumba. B\u00e9n\u00e9vole \u00e0 plein temps, originaire d&rsquo;Afrique du Sud, il a particip\u00e9 \u00e0 toutes les missions de Mercy Ships depuis 2000.<\/p>\n<p>Coumba n&rsquo;avait pas acc\u00e8s \u00e0 des soins appropri\u00e9s, mais son \u00e9tat pouvait \u00eatre trait\u00e9. Le Dr Venter est convaincu qu&rsquo;avec des soins imm\u00e9diats, elle aurait pu grandir avec un bras et une main op\u00e9rationnels, comme si l&rsquo;incendie n&rsquo;avait jamais eu lieu, \u00e0 l&rsquo;exception de marques disgracieuses sur sa peau.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00ab\u00a0Ce qui est positif avec les br\u00fblures, c&rsquo;est que seule la peau est touch\u00e9e, il s&rsquo;agit donc d&rsquo;une cicatrice et d&rsquo;une peau\u00a0\u00bb<\/em>, explique-t-il. <em>\u00ab\u00a0Les muscles sous-jacents, les tendons et les nerfs ne sont g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement pas endommag\u00e9s. Nous pouvons donc lib\u00e9rer les contractures, les remettre dans une position normale, et les muscles peuvent alors fonctionner \u00e0 nouveau, ce qui permet d&rsquo;obtenir de bons r\u00e9sultats.\u00a0\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Avec ses articulations raidies et ses muscles affaiblis par des d\u00e9cennies d&rsquo;inactivit\u00e9, ainsi que son coude bloqu\u00e9 en position fl\u00e9chie, la chirurgie de Coumba a \u00e9t\u00e9 lourde. Mais cela ne l&rsquo;a pas d\u00e9courag\u00e9e. <em>\u00ab\u00a0J&rsquo;ai \u00e0 peine ressenti la douleur parce que je savais que j&rsquo;allais gu\u00e9rir\u00a0\u00bb<\/em>, \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Une reprise prometteuse<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Le Dr Jody Kissel, th\u00e9rapeute de la main b\u00e9n\u00e9vole, a aid\u00e9 Coumba \u00e0 r\u00e9-utiliser son bras apr\u00e8s l&rsquo;op\u00e9ration et lui a expliqu\u00e9 comment poursuivre le processus de r\u00e9\u00e9ducation \u00e0 son retour \u00e0 la maison.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00ab\u00a0D&rsquo;ici un an, j&rsquo;ai bon espoir qu&rsquo;elle pourra lever le bras au-dessus de sa t\u00eate, suspendre le linge, s&rsquo;occuper de son enfant et faire les choses dont elle a envie\u00a0\u00bb<\/em>, affirme le Dr Kissel.<\/p>\n<p>Le plus grand r\u00eave de Coumba \u00e9tait de s&rsquo;occuper de ses propres cultures dans la ferme o\u00f9 elle vivait.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00ab\u00a0Je peux tout faire, sauf le travail n\u00e9cessaire dans une ferme mara\u00eech\u00e8re\u00a0\u00bb<\/em>, d\u00e9clare Coumba avec fiert\u00e9. <em>\u00ab\u00a0Au S\u00e9n\u00e9gal, les femmes ont souvent un petit espace o\u00f9 elles peuvent cultiver des pommes de terre, des carottes et des poivrons qu&rsquo;elles utilisent pour cuisiner leur propre nourriture, mais pour cela, il faut aller chercher de l&rsquo;eau au puits, et l&rsquo;h\u00f4pital et \u00e0 rentrer chez elle pour embrasser sa famille &#8211; avec les deux bras pour la toute premi\u00e8re fois. L\u00e0, elle a d\u00e9couvert que ses nouvelles capacit\u00e9s physiques lui donnaient de l&rsquo;ind\u00e9pendance dans beaucoup d&rsquo;aspects de la vie quotidienne.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00ab\u00a0J&rsquo;ai toujours voulu faire la lessive, maintenant je peux\u00a0\u00bb<\/em>, s&rsquo;\u00e9merveille Coumba. <em>\u00ab\u00a0Je peux aussi aller chercher du bois, prendre de l&rsquo;eau dans les puits. Avant, je ne pouvais utiliser qu&rsquo;une seule main, maintenant, je peux utiliser les deux. Elle est venue imm\u00e9diatement, mais j&rsquo;\u00e9tais d\u00e9j\u00e0 enti\u00e8rement br\u00fbl\u00e9e sur le c\u00f4t\u00e9 gauche.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Avec son bras gauche soud\u00e9 en position pli\u00e9e et sa main endommag\u00e9e, Coumba s&rsquo;est adapt\u00e9e \u00e0 vivre avec un seul bras et une seule main.
