Elle n&rsquo;\u00e9tait pas canc\u00e9reuse, mais loin d&rsquo;\u00eatre inoffensive.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0\u00c0 l&rsquo;\u00e9poque, j&rsquo;avais peur\u00a0\u00bb, se souvient-elle.<\/p>\n<p>Deux ans plus tard, la tumeur \u00e0 croissance rapide mena\u00e7ait la vie d&rsquo;Hawa. Elle devait prendre de petits repas \u00e0 l&rsquo;aide d&rsquo;une paille.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0J&rsquo;en arrivais \u00e0 un point o\u00f9 je ne pouvais plus manger\u00a0\u00bb, dit-elle. \u00ab\u00a0M\u00eame boire ou parler \u00e9tait devenu difficile\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>Hawa restait \u00e0 l&rsquo;int\u00e9rieur, pleurant et refusant de sortir. Il s&rsquo;est rendu compte que les m\u00e9decins locaux ne pouvaient pas pratiquer l&rsquo;op\u00e9ration n\u00e9cessaire. C&rsquo;est alors qu&rsquo;un ami l&rsquo;a mis en contact avec Mercy Ships.<\/p>\n<p>En 2005, il a fait le voyage avec Hawa jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 l&rsquo;Anastasis, o\u00f9 les m\u00e9decins l&rsquo;ont examin\u00e9e et ont estim\u00e9 qu&rsquo;elle devait \u00eatre op\u00e9r\u00e9e imm\u00e9diatement.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Tout le monde m&rsquo;entourait, m&rsquo;encourageait\u00a0\u00bb, dit-elle en se souvenant de sa premi\u00e8re visite sur le navire. Ils me disaient : \u00ab\u00a0Ne perds pas espoir, ne t&rsquo;inqui\u00e8te pas\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>Lorsqu&rsquo;Hawa est mont\u00e9e \u00e0 bord, sa peur s&rsquo;est envol\u00e9e. Elle a senti que les choses allaient s&rsquo;am\u00e9liorer &#8211; et c&rsquo;est ce qui s&rsquo;est pass\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Le Dr Gary Parker, chirurgien maxillo-facial b\u00e9n\u00e9vole depuis longtemps chez Mercy Ships, a enlev\u00e9 la tumeur d&rsquo;Hawa. La jeune femme se souvient encore de la r\u00e9action de son p\u00e8re lorsqu&rsquo;il l&rsquo;a vue.<\/p>\n<p>Il \u00e9tait si heureux, il dansait, \u00ab\u00a0Oh, mon Dieu, merci\u00a0\u00bb, dit-elle. \u00ab\u00a0Nous faisions la f\u00eate, nous \u00e9tions tellement contents\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>Lorsqu&rsquo;Hawa est rentr\u00e9e chez elle, ses amis ne l&rsquo;ont m\u00eame pas reconnue.<\/p>\n<p>Ils ont demand\u00e9 : \u00ab\u00a0C&rsquo;est toi Hawa ?\u00a0\u00bb, se souvient-elle en riant. Elle a r\u00e9pondu : \u00ab\u00a0Oui, c&rsquo;est moi&#8230; Ceux qui avaient perdu espoir pour moi et qui pensaient que je ne pourrais pas m&rsquo;en sortir n&rsquo;en revenaient pas.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Apr\u00e8s son exp\u00e9rience sur le navire, les perspectives de la vie d&rsquo;Hawa se sont \u00e9clair\u00e9es.<\/p>\n<p>Mon p\u00e8re m&rsquo;a regard\u00e9e et m&rsquo;a dit : \u00ab\u00a0Tu dois devenir infirmi\u00e8re toi aussi, pour pouvoir sauver d&rsquo;autres vies, comme on l&rsquo;a fait pour toi\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>Le p\u00e8re d&rsquo;Hawa est d\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9 peu apr\u00e8s avoir assist\u00e9 au miracle de sa fille. Elle a d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de vivre le r\u00eave de son p\u00e8re et s&rsquo;est engag\u00e9e sur la longue route qui m\u00e8ne au m\u00e9tier d&rsquo;infirmi\u00e8re.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n<style ><p><strong>Retour au navire<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>En 2011, Hawa est mont\u00e9e \u00e0 bord du nouveau navire de l&rsquo;\u00e9poque, l&rsquo;<em>Africa Mercy<\/em>\u00ae, lorsqu&rsquo;il est arriv\u00e9 \u00e0 Freetown.<\/p>\n<p>Elle a retrouv\u00e9 le Dr Gary Parker et a m\u00eame rencontr\u00e9 le Pr\u00e9sident et le Vice-Pr\u00e9sident de la Sierra Leone. Le Dr Parker a montr\u00e9 aux gens pr\u00e9sents une photo de la tumeur qui avait failli co\u00fbter la vie \u00e0 Hawa. Il n&rsquo;a cependant pas eu besoin de montrer une photo \u00ab\u00a0apr\u00e8s\u00a0\u00bb. Elle \u00e9tait l\u00e0, preuve d&rsquo;un miracle.<\/p>\n<p>Hawa a \u00e9t\u00e9 ovationn\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<p>En 2023, elle a de nouveau eu la chance de monter \u00e0 bord du tout nouveau navire-h\u00f4pital, le <em>Global Mercy<\/em>, et de retrouver des membres d&rsquo;\u00e9quipage qui avaient particip\u00e9 \u00e0 cette exp\u00e9rience bouleversante, comme Rachel Greenland, b\u00e9n\u00e9vole de longue date.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0\u00c0 l&rsquo;\u00e9poque o\u00f9 Hawa \u00e9tait \u00e0 bord, je travaillais au service p\u00e9diatrique et je l&rsquo;ai donc rencontr\u00e9e avec son p\u00e8re\u00a0\u00bb, se souvient Rachel. \u00ab\u00a0C&rsquo;est un grand privil\u00e8ge pour moi de la revoir ici aujourd&rsquo;hui. Nous parlons beaucoup de l&rsquo;impact du travail r\u00e9alis\u00e9, mais la voir ici vous montre vraiment les r\u00e9sultats. C&rsquo;est la raison pour laquelle je reviens toujours en tant que b\u00e9n\u00e9vole, ajoute-t-elle\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>Au cours de sa visite sur le Global Mercy, Hawa a rencontr\u00e9 un autre visage familier : celui de Cl\u00e9mentine Tengue, qui l&rsquo;a accueillie en la serrant affectueusement dans ses bras. Cl\u00e9mentine, qui travaille au service d&rsquo;aum\u00f4nerie de l&rsquo;h\u00f4pital, se souvient bien d&rsquo;Hawa et de son p\u00e8re. \u00ab\u00a0J&rsquo;\u00e9tais l\u00e0 quand Hawa et son p\u00e8re sont mont\u00e9s \u00e0 bord de l&rsquo;Africa Mercy. Je les ai accompagn\u00e9s tout au long du processus\u00a0\u00bb, dit-elle. \u00ab\u00a0C&rsquo;est la d\u00e9finition de l&rsquo;espoir : elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 op\u00e9r\u00e9e et veut maintenant aider les gens en devenant infirmi\u00e8re\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>Pour Hawa, l&rsquo;accueil \u00e0 bord \u00e9tait profond\u00e9ment chaleureux. \u00ab\u00a0La fa\u00e7on dont ils m&rsquo;ont exprim\u00e9 leur amour m&rsquo;a rappel\u00e9 ce qui s&rsquo;\u00e9tait pass\u00e9 lorsque j&rsquo;\u00e9tais enfant sur l&rsquo;<em>Africa Mercy<\/em>. C&rsquo;est sa vie tout enti\u00e8re qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 sauv\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Si je n&rsquo;avais pas \u00e9t\u00e9 op\u00e9r\u00e9e, je pense que je ne serais plus l\u00e0\u00a0\u00bb, dit-elle.<\/p>\n<p>Hawa travaille maintenant avec acharnement pour devenir infirmi\u00e8re. Certains jours, elle se l\u00e8ve \u00e0 2 heures du matin pour \u00e9tudier, puis se rend au bus \u00e0 5 heures.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0C&rsquo;est ce qui m&rsquo;a pouss\u00e9e \u00e0 devenir infirmi\u00e8re, je voulais moi aussi sauver des vies\u00a0\u00bb, explique-elle.<\/p>\n<p>Hawa nourrit un autre r\u00eave : celui de servir un jour comme infirmi\u00e8re \u00e0 bord d&rsquo;un navire-h\u00f4pital de Mercy Ships, aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s du Dr Gary Parker et des autres personnes qui lui ont sauv\u00e9 la vie.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Un jour, je raconterai ma vie aux gens\u00a0\u00bb, dit-elle. \u00ab\u00a0De la maladie \u00e0 aujourd&rsquo;hui. C&rsquo;est mon r\u00eave.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>En attendant, elle se r\u00e9jouit que le <em>Global Mercy<\/em> soit en Sierra Leone pour aider d&rsquo;autres personnes. Si quelqu&rsquo;un perd espoir, comme elle l&rsquo;a perdu, Hawa est certaine qu&rsquo;il le retrouvera.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Que personne n&rsquo;ait honte de quoi que ce soit\u00a0\u00bb, dit-elle.
