Sa m\u00e8re a eu du mal \u00e0 l&rsquo;allaiter et l&rsquo;a donc nourri au biberon, en s&rsquo;assurant qu&rsquo;il absorbait bien la quantit\u00e9 de lait dont il avait besoin.<\/p>\n<p>Sa d\u00e9glutition \u00e9tait difficile et la nourriture s&rsquo;\u00e9coulait souvent par le nez. Cheikh a donc d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 une aversion pour l&rsquo;alimentation et s&rsquo;est content\u00e9 d&rsquo;un r\u00e9gime compos\u00e9 essentiellement de lait maternis\u00e9 pendant les deux ann\u00e9es suivantes. La malnutrition a retard\u00e9 son d\u00e9veloppement ; ses trois s\u0153urs a\u00een\u00e9es avaient march\u00e9 avant leur premier anniversaire, mais Cheikh a f\u00eat\u00e9 ses deux ans en rampant, et ne parlait pas encore.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Je ne comprends pas vraiment pourquoi il refuse de manger\u00a0\u00bb, se lamentait sa m\u00e8re, inqui\u00e8te pour son petit gar\u00e7on.<\/p>\n<p>Deux ann\u00e9es difficiles se sont \u00e9coul\u00e9es avant qu&rsquo;elle n&#8217;emm\u00e8ne Cheikh sur le navire-h\u00f4pital de Mercy Ships le jour de son deuxi\u00e8me anniversaire. \u00ab\u00a0Je ne quittais jamais ma maison, j&rsquo;allais nulle part ailleurs. Je m&rsquo;occupais juste de Cheikh pour l&rsquo;aider \u00e0 manger et \u00e0 survivre\u00a0\u00bb, raconte Ndeye, qui a d\u00fb abandonner son travail pour s&rsquo;occuper de son fils.<\/p>\n<p>Comme Cheikh refusait g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement la nourriture solide, il consommait de grandes quantit\u00e9s de lait, ce qui pesait lourdement sur les finances du m\u00e9nage. Le p\u00e8re de Cheikh continuait \u00e0 travailler comme enseignant, mais il craignait de perdre son emploi, car la famille \u00e9tait mise au ban de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9. Ses coll\u00e8gues estimaient que la mauvaise sant\u00e9 de Cheikh refl\u00e9tait surement ses lacunes en tant que p\u00e8re et homme. Trina Laidlaw, coordinatrice b\u00e9n\u00e9vole de nutrition infantile, a accompagn\u00e9 Cheikh dans son programme d&rsquo;alimentation afin qu&rsquo;il prenne suffisamment de poids pour pouvoir \u00eatre op\u00e9r\u00e9 de sa fente labiale. Mais quelques jours plus tard, elle fut rassur\u00e9e, l&rsquo;op\u00e9ration s&rsquo;\u00e9tant bien d\u00e9roul\u00e9e pour Cheikh. \u00ab\u00a0\u00c0 ce moment-<\/p>\n<p>l\u00e0, j&rsquo;\u00e9tais tr\u00e8s heureuse\u00a0\u00bb, raconte-t-elle. Son mari l&rsquo;a appel\u00e9e et elle a dit : \u00ab\u00a0Le papa de Cheikh est encore plus heureux que moi !<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n<style type=\"text\/css\" Comme il avait encore du mal \u00e0 s&rsquo;alimenter, il n&rsquo;a pas pris le poids n\u00e9cessaire pour subir la deuxi\u00e8me intervention chirurgicale \u00e0 bord, celle de sa fente palatine. Ndeye est donc rentr\u00e9e chez elle avec l&rsquo;espoir d&rsquo;une op\u00e9ration future qui gu\u00e9rirait compl\u00e8tement son fils. L&rsquo;op\u00e9ration de la l\u00e8vre de Cheikh lui a ouvert les yeux sur l&rsquo;espoir, et les soins qu&rsquo;il a re\u00e7us lui ont redonn\u00e9 foi en l&rsquo;humanit\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Si Cheikh n&rsquo;avait pas eu cette malformation, les gens auraient parl\u00e9 de son intelligence. Ce n&rsquo;est pas un enfant paresseux\u00a0\u00bb, d\u00e9clare Mme Ndeye. \u00ab\u00a0Il aime jouer, il veut jouer tout le temps\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>R\u00e9confort\u00e9e par l&rsquo;amour qu&rsquo;ils ont re\u00e7u \u00e0 bord, Ndeye est pr\u00eate \u00e0 montrer son fils au monde entier :\u00a0\u00bbCertaines personnes n&rsquo;ont jamais vu Cheikh depuis sa naissance, parce que je ne le laissais pas sortir de la maison. Mais maintenant, si je veux, je le prends dans les bras et je vais marcher avec lui dans tout le quartier. Maintenant, je peux aller o\u00f9 je veux avec Cheikh\u00a0\u00bb.
