Dakar, SENEGAL – 12 May 2022. Following a three-day International Symposium bringing together medical experts from 29 African countries, Ministers of Health from around Africa converged in an historic moment to draft a clear path towards wider and safer access to surgical care in Africa by 2030.
International Symposium on Strengthening Surgical, Obstetric and Anaesthetic Care Systems in Africa to be hosted in May by the Government of Senegal and with the support of Mercy Ships
DAKAR, SENEGAL – 27 April 2022: As Mercy Ships marks its 30 years of service in Africa, the global humanitarian organisation will strengthen its partnerships with African countries and stakeholders in the health sector by co-hosting a number of events in May and June 2022. The first event will be an International Symposium (IS) on Strengthening Surgical, Obstetric and Anaesthetic Care Systems in Africa by 2030 between May 4 – 6 in Dakar, Senegal.
Two years ago, when the Africa Mercy® sailed from Senegal, hundreds of patients were left still waiting for their chance for surgery.
On February 1st, the ship returned to the port of Dakar to bring hope and healing to these patients and their families.
“A big thing about capacity building is training individual workers in different skills, but also training them to train others,” said Dr. John. “So that when we leave, they can continue scaling up that work.”
The Africa MercyⓇ and her crew have been offering direct care and training for years. But now with the completion of the newer and larger Global MercyⓇ, the Mercy Ships capacity for both surgery and mentoring will more than double.
Rotterdam, Netherlands – 15 March 2022: The 37,000-gt Global Mercy was welcomed in Rotterdam, Netherlands over the last two weeks as the ship opened its doors to the public and global dignitaries for tours before it will begin active service in June in Dakar, Senegal – the first of many missions in the next 50 years on the African continent.
DAKAR, SENEGAL, 24 February 2022. The first patient to undergo surgical treatment on Africa Mercy since its return to Africa has been welcomed aboard. Docked in the autonomous port of Dakar since February 1st this floating hospital has resumed its original mission to provide free surgeries and medical training on the continent after a 22-month pause caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
DAKAR SENEGAL, 2 February 2022 – The President of the Republic of Senegal, His Excellency Mr Macky SALL is pleased to announce that the Africa Mercy has returned as promised to continue the surgical operations and training that were interrupted in March 2020 by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The ship’s presence is expected to last until November 2022.
