The Africa Mercy® sailed to the Port of Douala in August 2017 to partner with Cameroon for the first time! During the ten-month field service, Mercy Ships offered direct medical services and provided medical capacity building programs for Cameroonian healthcare professionals. During this time, Mercy Ships volunteer professionals completed over 2,500 surgeries, leading to life-changing transformation for families and communities.

The training site at Laquintinie Hospital was renovated by Mercy Ships with a vision to create a National Centre of Excellence for Biomedical training in Cameroon. A local contractor was hired to renovate the biomedical storage facility. Both of the Mercy Ships biomedical technician courses took place at this site.
In partnership with Medical Aid International UK, two biomedical technician training courses were offered in partnership with six different hospitals in Douala. The first training course had 10 participants from four hospitals, while the second course had 13 participants from nine hospitals. Through this training, Mercy Ships aimed to equip biomedical technicians with the knowledge and tools necessary to keep Cameroonian hospitals functioning sustainably.
