The long-running relationship between Mercy Ships and Liberia has made a continued impact on the country’s surgical and anesthetic systems. From 2021 to 2023, long-term Mercy Ships personnel on the ground worked with Liberia’s Ministry of Health and national medical professionals to offer training and mentorship, provide strategic equipment donations, and perform highly specialized surgeries at partner hospitals.
Mercy Ships’ partnership with Liberia goes back many years. Monrovia was the first ever port of call for the Africa Mercy® when she began service in 2007, and the last for the Anastasis before she was retired. Between the two ships, Mercy Ships has conducted four field services in Monrovia since 2005. More than 3,000 people received free surgeries during the last visit in 2008. Volunteer crewmembers have had the honor of walking alongside the people of Liberia as they recover and rebuild following years of civil war that destroyed 95% of the nation’s healthcare infrastructure.

In anticipation of the arrival of Mercy Ships in mid-August 2020, we are looking for a number of dedicated local workers to partner with us. Mercy Ships uses hospital ships to transform lives and serve nations, one at a time, through surgical intervention and medical capacity building. Although the main focus is the hospital, we need many different types of skills to support the hospital. Follow the link to find out more!
Mercy Ships hopes to return to Liberia with one of its hospital ships in the coming years.
The volunteer professionals of Mercy Ships have been honored to partner with Liberia’s Ministry of Health and local and international partners in the past by offering immediate surgical intervention on board the hospital ships and sharing advice and resources to build Liberia’s own capacity. Between 2022 and 2023, in partnership with the Ministry of Health, over 1,000 healthcare professionals received training in topics like Neonatal Resuscitation, Primary Trauma Care, Safe Surgery, and other key areas. Mercy Ships volunteers assisted with leadership development at four hospitals, and mentored biomedical technicians in all 15 counties. Twenty-four anesthesia systems were donated to 15 hospitals, accompanied by training for the users. Nursing kits and PPE were also donated throughout the country, and Mercy Ships personnel performed more than 200 surgeries in partnership with local hospitals.
In collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Social Action, Mercy Ships will raise awareness in district health posts, health centers and regional hospitals.
Potential patients should be directed to the regional Hope Centers for registration during the registration week in their region.
People who are recognised as potential patients can be registered in one of the registration clinics or through our online form.
Mercy Ships their Patient Selection Team will visit regional hope centers to assess the registered patients.
Selected patients are invited to come to Monrovia for a secondary examination by a Mercy Ships surgeon.
Once the Mercy Ships surgeon has seen the patient, he or she will be scheduled for surgery. Once the surgery and follow-up care is completed, the patient will be able to return to their home.
When is Mercy Ships coming to Liberia?
The Africa Mercy will be arriving in the middle of August 2020 and will stay for a 10 month field service.
How do I register a patient?
Registration will begin several months before the arrival of the ship and will be communicated locally and on this website.
