Education, Training, and Advocacy

The Mercy Ships Education, Training, and Advocacy (ETA) team works collaboratively with our host nations to decrease the future burden of disease. We do this by:

  • Increasing the number of surgical providers, including surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nurses
  • Training local support staff like biomedical technicians, sterilizers, dietitians, and hospital managers
  • Developing sustainable and accredited education programs in partnership with local teachers
  • Advocating at a local, national, and international level for surgery to be prioritized within the nation’s healthcare system

This work takes place on our hospital ships, in local hospitals, and at local universities. Mercy Ships works closely with leaders of partner nations, like Senegalese health minister Professor Habib Ndiaye, who said, “In terms of partnerships, I would like to highlight the considerable contribution made by the Mercy Ships program in meeting the very high demand with regards to orthopedic surgery.”

Solutions for a lasting impact.

Mercy Ships works with host nations to achieve lasting impact by supporting and investing in local healthcare workers; donating and repairing equipment; providing technical resources; renovating medical facilities; and advocating for in-country surgical providers to receive the resources they need to deliver a sustainable, high quality of care.

Are you excited to learn and grow?

The Senegalese Ministry of Health and Social Affairs (MOHSA) is our main Partner in establishing our Medical Capacity Building program. While we’re in the process of finalizing our program for Senegal for 2019 – 2020 we’re happy to receive some information from you already. Fill out our online form if you’re already working in the medical field.

Mercy Ships doesn’t offer educational programs. Our MCB programs are in support of people who already work in the medical field. We’re offering our programs in partnership with local hospitals and clinics in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs. Our courses and mentoring are meant to expand the knowledge base of medical professionals already working in their field of practice.

Please note that all Mercy Ships courses and mentoring are free of charge, so no per diem or compensation is provided by Mercy Ships.
